When your family joins Wheaton Montessori School, you aren't just enrolling your child in an educational program; you are becoming an essential part of a vibrant, supportive community.
In a Montessori environment, education extends far beyond academic achievements. It is deeply rooted in human connection, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to nurturing each child's potential. When children, parents, and teachers come together with a unified purpose, we create a strong network of support that allows every child to feel safe, known, and deeply valued.
The Power of Belonging in a Montessori Community
When a child sees their parents and teachers conversing warmly and collaborating, it reinforces a profound sense of security and belonging.
- For Children: Knowing that their home and school worlds are connected helps children feel grounded. Seeing their peers in different settings builds strong social bonds, empathy, and a broader understanding of community.
- For Parents: Parenting is a journey that is best shared. Connecting with other families who share similar values offers reassurance, fresh perspectives, and lasting friendships.
Learning Through Authentic Connection Across All Ages
The spirit of community evolves naturally through each stage of our programs:
- In Primary (Ages 2 ½ –6): Young children learn the foundations of community through grace and courtesy: learning how to welcome a friend, share a meal, and care for their shared environment.
- In Elementary (Grades 1–6): Elementary students expand their community awareness through group research, collaborative problem-solving, and organizing school-wide service projects.
- In Adolescent Program (Grades 7–9): For our adolescents, community is at the very core of learning. Students work together on land-based work, manage micro-business endeavors, and present research projects to each other, actively practicing real-world leadership and conflict resolution.
When we gather outside of school hours, children and adolescents across all levels are excited to attend. Of course, many want to know that their friends plan to be there too. I hope you can make it. We are often told how helpful it can be for parents to talk with each other during these events. This may be why we have nearly 100% attendance.
Ways to Nurture Community Within Family
Building a strong community starts with small practices.
“Two routine events in the life of a young child should, whenever possible, include a parent’s full, undistracted attention: meals and reading. There are as many ways to be a good parent as there are varieties of good people who love well, but reading to children and eating with children always provides a sure, solid foundation for growth and learning. Presence and attention offered at meals and by reading aloud are, magically, often more than enough for a young child to thrive. Paying attention routinely is, in Weil’s words, generous. To a young child, predictable personal attention with a parent, a meal, or a book feels like a gift. “
-Mrs. Jennifer Rogers, Primary Teacher
